Internships

AFSCME Ohio Council 8 has a four (4) week internship program that was created to give AFSCME local union officers, stewards and members who are interested in a career as a union staff member an opportunity to work with staff and observe them on the job.

Over the course of the month, interns will observe collective bargaining negotiations, labor-management meetings with various employers, grievance hearings, witness preparation, and internal/external organizing campaigns. Depending on the union's business during the internship, interns may also observe an arbitration or fact-finding hearing or attend staff training sessions.

The internship program is open to any local union officer, steward or union member who is eligible for paid union release time through their employer.

The four (4) week period of the internship is flexible and the Council can work with qualifying individuals to determine when the internship will be completed. The council is seeking to initially grant one internship per region.

Please note that as permanent staff positions become available, AFSCME Ohio Council 8 will give extra consideration to officers, stewards and members who have successfully completed the internship program for future employment.
