ABOUT US
Our members know better than anyone else that public service isn’t just a job. It’s a commitment to serving and making our community a better place. Whether working in a city’s public works or water department, as a social worker at a not-for-profit social service facility, or in many other roles and responsibilities, our members make our communities stronger. As a union member in public service, you work hard for your community. AFSCME Ohio Council 8 works to make sure you have the dignity and respect you deserve through solid contracts, better benefits, safe worksites, and a voice on the job.
AFSCME STRONG with AFSCME Ohio Council 8
AFSCME Ohio Council 8 represents over 32,000 public and private sector employees who work in public service across Ohio. Our members work to maintain city streets and keep drinking water safe. They are sanitation employees, trades, maintenance and custodial workers, social workers, and health care professionals, including nurses, lab technicians, and hospital staff. AFSCME Ohio Council 8 members work in Ohio universities, public schools, public and private museums, and as public defenders and city and county administrative and clerical employees. We are affiliated with AFSCME and the AFL-CIO and are proud to join 1.4 million members who provide the vital services that make America happen.
STAFF REPRESENTATION
We have eight regional offices across Ohio, giving our AFSCME Locals and individual members convenient and consistent access to our professional union staff. Staff representatives are available to assist in negotiating strong union contracts, providing guidance around grievances and contract enforcement, and growing and strengthening AFSCME Ohio Council 8 affiliated local unions.
LEGAL ANALYSIS and EXPERTISE
As an AFSCME Local, your membership has access to the best Labor and Legal professionals who can help provide legal analysis or specific legal services when necessary.
LEGISLATIVE AND GRASSROOTS SUPPORT
As public service workers, our members have the unique power to elect their bosses. Union dues are NOT used in any political activity. Still, we offer volunteer opportunities, including our PEOPLE program, for members to participate in determining the outcome of local, statewide, and national elections that could directly impact their work. AFSCME Ohio Council 8 also lobbies for legislation that improves their working conditions and the well-being of our members and their families at the state and local levels.
ORGANIZING
AFSCME Ohio Council 8 believes all working people deserve dignity and respect. That is why we think everyone should have the opportunity to organize a union in their workplace. AFSCME Ohio Council 8 and our Organizing Department are committed to supporting public service workers in any area, the public or private sector, guiding them through the organizing process. If you are interested in joining AFSCME Ohio Council 8 or forming a union at your workplace, please contact (office number) or fill out this form(Link), and an organizer will reach out.
