Workers Memorial Day Events

Akron CLC May Day

AFSCME Ohio Council 8 members and staff paid tribute to workers during several events across the state. On April 30, 2025, members in Athens and Akron honored the memory of workers who lost their lives or were injured on the job. AFSCME members from Local 2696 attended the Akron AFL-CIO sponsored event.

In Athens, members from AFSCME Local 1699 and 3200 attended an event sponsored by the Southeast Central Labor Council. AFSCME Ohio Council 8 Athens regional staff and members were on hand to celebrate Regional Director Johnny Johnson being named one of the 2025 Champions of Labor Award recipients. Johnson was one of four recipients, including OAPSE President Lois Carson and Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga.

Hamilton County Public Defenders Collective are honored at the Cincinnati area CLC during the May Day Luncheon

Cincinnati, OH – The Cincinnati-area Central Labor Council held its annual May Day Luncheon. The event honored one of AFSCME Ohio Council 8's newest locals. The Hamilton County Public Defenders Collective recently won their union election and is now bargaining its first contract. The newly organized unit was honored for its perseverance and commitment to improving their workplace and building solidarity and strength through a difficult organizing drive. AFSCME Ohio Council 8 proudly welcomes these new members and celebrates their recent award.
