After finishing his shift for the day working as a heavy equipment operator for the City of Toledo, Charlie Moore (AFSCME Local 7) noticed on his drive home a young girl in tears and stopped to see what was wrong.

The 9-year-old’s bike was broken after neighborhood boys had taken and damaged it by riding it over a makeshift ramp, leaving her crying with her older sister.

Moore told local news that he successfully “got the bicycle back, but the bicycle front tire was all bent up and broken.” He then made sure the girls got home safely and walked them home.

However, Moore’s everyday heroism didn’t stop there. He remembered earlier in his shift seeing some discarded bikes on the side of the road. He returned to those bikes, found a wheel that would work, and went to fix the girl’s bike for her.

This is also not the first time Charlie has been recognized for such acts of kindness in the community, where he has worked for the city since 2018.

“I want people to know there are kind people out there, there are people who will have your back, even if you don’t know them,” Moore said.

Moore’s actions remind us that AFSCME members in our communities go above and beyond in big and small ways every day to make sure we have safe communities we can thrive in.
