City of Canton and AFSCME Local 2937 Unveil New CDL Certification Program

Canton, OH - AFSCME Local 2937 and the City of Canton have launched a pilot program that allows employees to obtain their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), fully funded by the city. The union and the city signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in early February.

The program will enroll approximately nine city employees in a CDL training course every six months. Successful participants will earn their CDL, which will allow them to apply for higher-paying positions and additional career opportunities within the city.

AFSCME Local 2937 President Chuck Seifer is proud of the union’s collaboration with the city. "I've worked for the city of Canton as a union employee. It's the kind of job people can build a career in. This is one more way an employee can advance in their career."

The city and the union recognized the need for this program when it became clear that CDL-required positions were not being filled quickly enough.

By providing current employees with CDL training, the program utilizes the city's talented and resourceful employees while benefiting the city, its workforce, and the broader Canton community.

The first training class began on March 10, 2025. AFSCME Ohio Council 8 wishes the participants the best of luck.
